William Stott of Oldham’s painting Le Passeur (The Ferryman) is considered a key moment in the breakthrough of British Art to naturalism and established Stott as one of the most progressive British artists of his day.
Christopher Le Brun’s work is characterised by directness of touch and luminosity of colour, his interest in light and space perhaps the influence of growing up on the south coast.
Permanent exhibition - The Main Hall features a rotating display that showcases Southampton City Art Gallery’s internationally renowned permanent collection.
Explore Southampton City Art Gallery’s diverse collection of fine art, which can tell the story of European art from the Renaissance through to the present day. Regularly rotating displays feature works from the collection, national touring exhibitions and work by local artists.
