The upcoming Kathakali meets Carnival exhibition at the gallery has an extensive events and activities programme running alongside it! See below for the full listings.

Exhibition Opening (All ages)
Sat 13 May / 1-3pm / FREE / Drop-in
Enjoy a solo performance of Kathakali by Kalamandalam Vijayakumar, meet the
artists and learn about the heritage of Kathakali and Carnival.

India Day (All ages)
Sat 20 May / 1-3pm / FREE / Drop-in
Celebrate the culture and heritage of Southern India and join us for a spectacular day of performances and rituals.

Make a Mandala (5-11yrs)
Weds 31 May / 10am-12noon or 1.30-3.30pm / £6 / Pre-book
Experiment with different materials and be inspired by the colours and patterns of our Kathakali exhibition.

Caribbean Day (All ages)
Sat 3 June / 1-3pm / FREE / No booking required
Explore the culture and heritage of the Caribbean through storytelling, music and songs performed by Alexander D Great.

Kathakali Papercutting
Sat 1 July / 11am-4pm / £34 / Pre-book
Join artist Jacqueline Rolls to explore Kathakali inspired papercutting techniques.

Kathakali Costume Conservation
Sat 15 July / 10.30am-12noon / £15 / Pre-book
These incredible costumes have evolved from ancient cultures, requiring skills passed down through the generations. Discover the characters they represent and how to apply the gold foil onto the wooden ornaments.

Migration of Heritage through Objects
Sat 15 July / 1-2.30pm / £10 / Pre-book
Explore how heritage is carried through objects, the journey they have made and the memories they hold. Bring along your own object and share it’s unique history.

Kathakali Style Puppetry (5-11yrs)
Wed 2 Aug / 10am-12noon or 1.30-3.30pm / £6 / Pre-book
Design your own dancing shadow puppet inspired by colourful make-up, costumes and face masks.

Carnival Day (7yrs+)
Sat 5 Aug / 10.30am-3pm / FREE / Drop-in
Discover the history, get inspiration from the costumes and create a headdress. Led by The New Carnival Company.

India and Carnival Day plus Carnival Headdresses (7yrs+)
Sat 12 Aug / 10.30am-3pm / FREE / Drop-in / 10.30am-12noon
Learn about carnival from members of the New Carnival Company then make a carnival headdress to take home.

1-3pm – Kathakali Performances (All ages)
An afternoon of Kathakali and Bharathanatyam performances in beautiful costumes  and makeup.
